The Perodua Eco-Challenge 2010 happened at the Melaka International Motorsports Circuit over the weekend, and we were there to witness 12 institutions of higher learning “racing” to squeeze out the the most kilometres from one-litre of Petronas Primax 95 fuel.

This edition is the second year where Perodua is running the Eco-Challenge as part of its corporate responsibility program. Malaysia biggest car maker by volume wants to make P2EC an annual event, and is seeking to rope in the Ministry of Higher Education and other corporations such as Petronas as co-organisers of this innovation nurturing competition. So far, Perodua has spent RM2.2 million on P2EC (over 2 years), which we think is money well spent and good value for the carmaker, considering the publicity generated.

Back in February, Perodua donated one unit of the Viva plus RM10,000 seed money to each of the engineering departments of the participating institutions, which included Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS), Universiti Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia France Institute (UniKL-MFI), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO). The other institutions are Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.

Juara Kumpulan B Argentina menewaskan Greece 2-0.

With some reports claiming that Proton will offload 40% of wholly-owned subsidiary Lotus to the British brand’s management team, Proton Holdings Bhd has reiterated that Lotus Group International Ltd is not for sale at this point in time. The national carmaker said this in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

Proton said that it had over the years received several unsolicited offers for a stake in Lotus and had taken cognisance of such offers. The statement added that Lotus would continue to be a strategic entity within Proton and its technology catalyst. However, as a proactive business entity, it said Proton would continue to initiate and consider viable business opportunities and arrangements which would benefit and add value to the group’s interests.

Proton would make relevant announcements at an appropriate time, the statement added. Notice that Lotus is not for sale only “at this point in time” which could also mean that a sale might be considered later on. That’s just pure speculation of course, but should the engineering experts be on the market, there will be no shortage of takers.

Meanwhile, Lotus is set for a brand relaunch, which could be presented at the Paris Motor Show in October. The maker of the Elise and Evora has hired McCann Erickson Central to create a new brand identity, “web solutions” for both Lotus Cars and Lotus Engineering, support materials, a new brochure suite and support for the Paris launch.

Perkara sama turut dipersetujui firma penyelidikan, HwangDBS Vickers Research Sdn Bhd.

Proton saw a list of Bursa Malaysia announcements last week pertaining the boardroom and audit committee. Two members have resigned – Non-Executive Director Haji Abdul Kadir Bin Md Kassim and Non-Executive Director Oh Kim Sun. In addition to the resignations, ex-Hyundai India man BVR Subbu has been appointed to the Audit Committee, which now consists of BVR Subbu, Dato’ Michael Lim and Datuk Zalekha Binti Hassan.

Other than our local Malaysian market, Proton will be focusing on exports markets with four main key markets identified – India, China, ASEAN and the Middle East. It already has something running in China in a partnership with the Youngman Group, which rebadges Proton cars under the Europestar Lotus brand. Europestar recently launched a new car in China called the Youngman Lotus L5 with a longer wheelbase compared to the GEN2 and Persona, something not available in Malaysia.

Proton is already in the Middle East and in ASEAN so the remaining ‘key market’ that it has yet to set foot in is India, which would explain the hiring of BVR Subbu and now appointing him as member of the Audit Committee.

According to an email interview with India’s Business Standard publication, a small car based on the Proton EMAS will be adopted for the four key markets including India. The EMAS Concept’s length of 3,550mm makes it suitable for sale in India as it would help it be priced competitively, as the length falls into a tax bracket (vehicle length based) that is low.

The EMAS Concept should be able to be priced well if the vehicle’s actual production costs are low since tax will not be a hindrance, unlike Mahindra and Renault’s attempt at selling the Logan in India which was a disaster due to uncompetitive pricing thanks to the Logan’s length of over 4 meters.
